Day 76 of 100 Day Raw Food Challenge- Dooce & Oprah

Today I checked out Oprah's cleanse blog, and www.Dooce.com, and had a mental breakthrough about what it takes to be successful on a diet, a cleanse, or a long term raw food lifestyle.

Thanks, O! Thanks, Dooce!

Bravo Bunny,

I agree with you 100%. I have tried at times to be that valedictorian with a variety of things in my life. All it did was cause stress and add misery. Stress and misery ARE NOT healthy. I had an upset stomach a few days ago and I.......ate some.... crackers :) The next day I was happily back to my raw foods.

Happy for your epiphany!

Word. I'm with you. I'm not perfect and VERY few are valedictorians in this world, especially when it comes to diet, specifically a raw food diet. I choose to call myself high raw. That gives me a margin for error because if I were to say I'm 100% raw, the raw police would show up the first time I broke out the maple syrup or ate a black bean. I think you hit the nail on the head...consistency is the ticket!

Have a rawesome weekend, BunBun. Love you!

i was really disappointed to see all the people on dooce's post saying, "yeah, go girl! avoiding processed foods, sugar and caffeine will kill you! eat shit! that's the way to be healthy!" okay, sorry for the potty mouth but seriously, WTF?

i'm with you, though. after three years on a vegan diet and trying raw now i've learned to be gentle with myself. if i obsess over something i can't have the stress isn't going to do anything good for myself. like viv said, i eat something and then i move on with my life. no biggie. health encompasses so much more than what we eat.

i'm sorry, i meant to say that the stress isn't going to do anything good for my HEALTH. :)

You Are So Right!!! I'm trying to find a framework for flexibility & it certainly sounds like you've hit on it. Enjoy the market :-)

Amen,sista!
I found this vlog so freeing for me--I find my attitude is the real hurdle, not the food.

I refuse to stress out about my ronco dehydrator getting up to 135 degrees or beat myself up over my morning cup of coffee. Raw food is defined by what you do eat, not what you don't eat. I'll be happy with being 95% raw. It's still better for you than eating SAD.

We should all be proud of ourselves. Awareness that the SAD diet is BAD is actually half the battle to begin with!

Thanks Bunny G,

Bunny, as usual you ge me thinking. I grew up with parents always comparing me to someone more successful, etc. So it is hard to overcome that when reading about people who just seem to do it so effortlessly. I love reading the comments here ... which reafirms that it is the consistency which we do things, not necessarily the level ... that gives me room to adjust rather then get frustrated and give up if I stray a bit. We made your cucumber wraps and everyone wants more!

yes!!! I love this sentiment... once i realized I could "just move on" instead of stressing over a mistake raw food has been easy!

You are so right about moving on - sometimes I get annoyed with myself when I eat things I know I shouldn't, but we can't change the past, right? All we can do is learn from our experience and move on. Easier said than done sometimes, I'll admit. You look very happy and radiant today, by the way - raw food glow! Cheers!

Right on. Have you read The China Study yet? If not, one can go to www.thechinastudy.com to click and read the excerpt. It makes going vegan a snap...and gives all the reasons why everyone you love should, too.

Hi Bunny,
Sounds like you are doing just great. When I first went raw I thought that if I did not eat a cup of beans a day I would not be healthy but as time went on I cut that out and the other things too and now I am just about 100%. As your body cleans up you get much more intuitive about what you want to eat and you get much more knowlegable. I had some cooked meals and figured out that it was just slowing me down so I moved on to better things. I did not beat myself up about it but just continued on the path. I did a study on Natural Hygiene and that changed my whole understanding of health and why I am doing what I am doing. Hurbert Shelton was a great practicioner and I find his writing very inspirational.
Hang in there, it seems like you are going in a great direction.

Sorry, I can't type sometimes...

I was disappointed (okay, somewhat) in dooce and Oprah but on the other hand both have pointed out things that were valuable to them and hope to make permanent changes. Of course, I kept hearing how Ms. O wanted her alcohol and was so crabby at dooce's doc, it made her decision to go back too easy. But following both of them on their cleanse made me more of a believer in this healthy path I AM ON. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I couldn't agree with you more. :-D

I feel the same as HiHo. It concerns me about Oprah and her alcohol cravings - for her and for any children hearing her talk about alcohol. But I'm so glad she's experienced vegan and conscious eating. I am so grateful, too, for learning these lessons myself.

hi bunny,

thanks so much for this perspective. it was JUST what i needed after a heavily cooked and non-vegan weekend with family on martha's vineyard. i am thrilled to get back on the wagon again now that i'm back home and in control of my food options.

thanks again, and hope your weekend was great!

But Bunny, I went to Stanford! Can't I be the Ivy Leaguer of raw foods too?? :) Believe me--watching your vlog was so helpful after I slipped and had a slice of pizza today. I'm writing a book about transitioning to raw foods and would love permission to include this: "In order to be able to stay and maintain this kind of radical food lifestyle…it’s more important to be consistent than it is to be perfect.” Brilliant--you hit the nail on the head.

You are so insightful, Bunny! Does perfection even exist, anyway?

Being consistent is so important, and not stressing over the little bumps along the path is equally important.

You are doing so wonderful and I love that you are sharing your journey with everyone.

Lots of love to you!

Wendi
XOXOXO

p.s. There are so many things that aren't technically 100% raw, that it's near impossible to truly be perfectly raw if you aren't eating the fruits, nuts, seeds and veggies right where they are growing. :-P
